Hey, I’m a somewhat proud owner of a Nokia 770, but I wish that the pelpoe behind the product would embrace open development as well as open source. Right now you have pelpoe doing various independent things to improve Maemo, but mostly quick and dirty ports of existing apps. It feels like we’re shut out from having any serious impact on the development of the core OS and software. If you desire for Maemo to become more widespread than just Nokia hardware, I think it’s necessarily to cede some control over it to an independent community, so that other stakeholders will know where development is going, and can have a say as well. I don’t have any notable experience or influence to back my opinion, but hopefully it can be taken seriously nonetheless. I don’t feel as comfortable contributing any code or porting to the Maemo community given the current one-sided relationship between Nokia and developers. I also have no way of knowing whether my effort would be a reinvention of something Nokia is developing in private, like telepathy-SIP.
